A Colchester rugby player has a warrant out for his arrest after failing to attend court to face an accusation of grievous bodily harm on an opponent during a game at Thorpeness.

Adam Randle, of Samsons Road, Brightlingsea, is alleged to have been responsible for an assault on one of Thorpeness’ players who was said to have sustained a fractured eye socket and jaw.

The incident took place during the first half of a match in the Eastern Counties Division 2 South. The game was being played at Thorpeness Rugby Club, now Aldeburgh and Thorpeness Rugby Club, on Saturday, October 25.

It is understood a melee involving players broke out in which one of the Suffolk club’s players was hurt.

An ambulance was called and injuries sustained by the Thorpeness player led to him being taken to Ipswich Hospital for treatment. When the game ended the score was Thorpeness 12 Colchester 2nd XV 29.

Following a police investigation Randle was due to appear before North East Suffolk magistrates in Lowestoft on March 31.

The 29-year-old was to face a charge of wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent on Jonathan Taylor.

However, Randle did not attend court and a bench warrant was issued by magistrates for his arrest.

Suffolk Constabulary have said the warrant is still outstanding. It is understood Essex Police officers have made checks in the Colchester area, but Randle has not been located.

Anne-Marie Breach, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary, said: “As with any bench warrant which has been issued police will conduct enquiries to locate the person involved to ensure they are brought before the court.

“In this case officers are making further checks to find Mr Randle.”
