PAUL Kyriakides is under a community rehabilitation order today after two police offices discovered a dangerous martial arts weapon on him.

Kyriakides, of St Francis Tower, Ipswich, appeared before South East Suffolk Magistrates Court where he was given an 18-month CRO.

The 36-year-old, who had pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, was found with the weapon, known as nunchuks, in Station Road, Ipswich at around 9.50pm on January 29.

He was confronted by two police officers who were attending another incident and the weapon was seized.

Kyriakides said he had the weapon because two men had threatened him previously that night.

At a previous court appearance Roger Thomson, in mitigation, told the court that his client had been drinking and went to the shop. On the way the two men confronted him. He then ran back to his friend's house to call the police. He borrowed the nunchuks and went to see where the two men were.

Mr Thomson said: "It was not used and in his state of not being sober I am not actually sure he would know how to use it."

The case was adjourned until yesterday for a pre-sentence report.

There was a destruction order made against the weapon and Kyriakides was ordered to pay £55 costs.
