THIEVES stole a substantial amount of copper from a primary school roof.

The copper was taken from Melton Primary School, near Woodbridge, and it is believed the incident took place on Friday night.

The theft was discovered when pupils and staff turned up to rehearse a play over the weekend.

They noticed that a steady flow of rain water was pouring through the school roof and on to the floor.

Staff were able to seal the leak with tarpaulin covers and hope to repair the damage this week.

Nobody from the school or Suffolk County Council was available for comment last night.

A police spokesperson said that officers had been called to the school and were still investigating the incident.

They are unsure of the exact amount of copper taken but are appealing for information on the incident.
