IPSWICH: Rio de Janeiro it might not be, but the Girls from Brazil have voted Ipswich number one for gymnastics training facilities.

For the past week, the country's women gymnasts have been using Team Ipswich's facilities at Gainsborough sport centre to train ahead of the world championships, which start next week at the O2 arena in London.

If all goes to plan, the Brazilians will be returning to Ipswich as their base for the 2012 Olympics in London.

“We are very impressed with all the facilities and also with the town,” says Georgette Vidor, head of the gymnastic delegation.

“We have been made welcome, the hotel, food, entertainment and transport facilities have all been first class.

“The girls love the place and the national coach thinks these are among the best training centres he has ever visited. All in all, we think Ipswich is favourably placed to become our pre-Olympics camp.”

Georgette added: “Of course, your country is not as hot as we are used to in Brazil, but during our stay here, the weather has been sunny and warm which has been a delight.

“I think we will be putting in a recommendation to the men's team that they come to Ipswich.”

Judy Terry, the borough's portfolio holder for leisure, was pleased at the team's response to what the town had to offer.

“We are delighted to have the Brazilian team in Ipswich. The gymnastic centre clearly has a good reputation for hosting international teams and building a positive working relationship.

“Let's hope that both the men's and women's teams will use Ipswich for their 2012 preparations.”
