AN INITIATIVE making it easier for its residents and customers to pay for its goods and services.

From April this year Babergh District Council will accept any payment due to the council by credit or debit card.

Holders of MasterCard, Visa, Visa Electron, Switch and Solo cards can use their cards for over the counter payments at Babergh's main offices in Hadleigh or if that is inconvenient, to pay over the phone or by post.

At the same time, Babergh's three Tourist Information Centres in Flatford, Lavenham and Sudbury will also accept card payments in respect of items sold by them from the same date.

The introduction of credit and debit card payment facilities has involved many months of careful planning and negotiation with the Council's bank.

Bob Southgate, Babergh's Head of Local Taxation said: "Babergh is keen to give local people as much choice as to how they settle their bills. Equally, we hope that the introduction of credit and debit card payment facilities at the Tourist Information Centres will help visitors to the district."
