IPSWICH Council is to move its meetings away from the town's Corn Exchange from the summer.

The annual council meeting on June 23 will be the last to be held in the Grand Hall of the Corn Exchange.

After that all council meetings will be held in Suffolk County Council's new Endeavour House headquarters.

The new council chamber there is nearing completion - and borough chief executive James Hehir said it made sense to use it.

"It is easier for people with disablities to access and at the times we want to use it the county will not be needing to use it," he said.

"We will have the annual meeting in the Corn Exchange because that is a ceremonial event at which there are always a lot of members of the public, but after then all our meetings will be held in Endeavour House."

The move seems certain to indicate that new offices which are expected to be built for the borough on land opposite Endeavour House will not include a council chamber.

"Frankly if we were to build new offices opposite Endeavour House and have our own council chamber just 50 yards from the county council's you and your readers would - quite rightly - be very angry," said deputy leader David Ellesmere.
