HAPPY retirement plans turned to nightmare for one Kesgrave couple after the Royal Mail lost a banker's draft for £250,000.
Rather than the dream of putting their feet up, 60-year-old Laurence Power is now faced with finding work while his wife Annette is drawing job seeker's allowance.
The postal bungle also means the couple face a nail-biting six years in which they could even lose their home.
The missing money was to be used to buy their home in Suffolk and pay off a car loan.
Because of the blunder the couple have been made temporarily homeless and seen their life savings of £75,000 wiped out.
Grandmother Mrs Power said: "We are living on a knife-edge, knowing that at any moment we could lose our home. We were looking forward to some luxury in our retirement.
"Those savings represented my husband's and my lifetime work. Now I'm going to have to go out and get a job."
By way of compensation the Powers have had their postage costs reimbursed, received a three-page letter of apology and a pay-out of just £250.
