JAMES Harris has man's best friend to thank for his 50 years of wedded bliss.

A young James got more than he bargained for while walking his dog when he bumped in to a girl named Dot Boyton.

That was in 1947 and the Ipswich couple are still going strong.

"I lived on the Greenwich Estate and Dot lived on Gainsborough. I met her outside the Duke of Gloucester with my dog Tricks, and we have been together ever since," said 68-year-old James, of Foxhall Road.

The couple married on November 10, 1951, at All Hallows Church in Ipswich, but although the couple are Suffolk born and bred they have spent much of their married life travelling the world.

"James was in the army for 22 years and we lived all over the place, from Germany to North Africa and Benghazi. Benghazi was my favourite and my children were born all over the world," said Dot.

The Harris' pride themselves on always being busy and with six children, 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren they are certainly kept occupied. The couple feel this is something that has kept them together for so long. Even when James left the army as a Squadron Sergeant Major in the 14th/20th Kings Hussars they always had plenty to do.

"At the moment I am busy doing a bungalow up we have just bought and we will move in to it in the New Year. We are always busy and this is important to us, there is no time to sit down and worry about things, we just get on with it," said James.

The couple celebrated their big day with a party at St Clement's Sports Club where they were joined by friends and family.

"We just want to thank everyone who came and for the lovely presents, it made it all the more special to have everyone there," added James.
