COR-GETTE! This whopping vegetable was found purely by chance in the garden of an Ipswich home.

Measuring more than four feet long and weighing in at an impressive 11lb this veg could be one of the biggest of its kind found in Ipswich.

However it is still some way from being a world record – that noteworthy distinction is held by the UK's Bernhard Lavery, who uncovered a massive 64lb courgette in Llanharry in 1990.

However Ipswich woman Wendy Corbyn is rightly proud of the discovery she and husband Robert made at their Princethorpe Road home.

She said: "It was purely by chance. We planted the seeds, which are from Italy, earlier this year but we noticed the plant wasn't producing.

"My husband, Robert, went to have a look and found this hiding behind a fir tree.

"He came in and said he had a surprise for me. I was hoping for flowers or chocolates so this was something of a disappointment.

"I don't even like courgettes, so I think we will give it to Robert's sister."

She added that while Robert is a keen gardener, who has grown some impressive Italian tomatoes, nothing compares to their recent find.

And the discovery is certainly causing heads to turn in gardening circles. Evening Star gardening correspondent Rick Staines said: "Four feet is rather longer than most courgettes – it's a monster.

"If they are left alone they can get big, two-foot long courgettes are quite common, and I have heard of some three-feet ones but four-feet is really big – it's the brontosaurus of the courgette world!"

BIG VEG

Courgettes aren't the only examples of overgrown vegetables. The following are some of the discoveries listed in the Guinness Book of Records.

n King Carrot – Courgette champion Bernard Lavery has grown a carrot weighing 15lb 11oz, a watermelon at 262lb and a cabbage at 124lb

n Rhubarb– Eric Stone of Wiltshire would need a lot of custard to go with the 5lb 14oz rhubarb he grew in 1985.

n What a Peach – Jean Bird of London grew a peach weighing in at 14oz in 1984.
