A CAR could have collided with a van used in a burglary just moments before it ploughed through the front of a restaurant, police have confirmed.

The accident happened at E & Vs Coffee House and Restaurant in High Street, Needham Market, around 5pm on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said detectives were investigating the possibility that a van used during a burglary at a nearby business premises could have collided with the silver Mercedes, sending the vehicle into the window of the property.

She said: “At the moment inquiries are underway and there is an investigation into the exact circumstances.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the accident but owners Mike and Sue Moore estimate it caused tens of thousands of pounds of damage to the listed building.

The couple, who celebrated nine years in charge at E & Vs on Friday, have both been left stunned by the incident and have had to shut their business until repairs are carried out.

Mrs Moore said: “It is still very early days and there is a lot of sorting out to do but we think we will be closed for nearly six weeks, which of course is not good news for us.”

The occupants of the car received only slight injuries and did not need to be taken to hospital.
