FELIXSTOWE-bound traffic was this morning brought to a near standstill after an accident on the Orwell Bridge.

The nearside lane on the eastbound carriageway was closed after a car was involved in a collision with a lorry just before 9am. Suffolk Police said they were not aware of any major tailbacks even though one lane was blocked. Traffic was slowly getting through as police were in the process of clearing vehicles.

The driver of a Saab car escaped when his car came to rest in a crash barrier at the Felixstowe end of the bridge.

The car, travelling in the outside lane, was believed to have clipped the rear of the lorry in the nearside lane, causing it to hit a crash barrier and spin around for approximately 30 metres after the initial impact.

The car driver, who did not want to be named, was uninjured, but his car suffered extensive damage to the front.

The Dutch-owned lorry sustained minimal damage to its tyres. The driver was not hurt.
