A MAN and a woman were taken to hospital today after a serious road accident in Westerfield.

The man, aged in his 40s or 50s, was driving a Red Daewoo when it collided with a Jewson lorry at the junction of Westerfield Road and Lower Road.

The driving of the car is believed to have suffered head or chest injuries which are potentially life threatening.

The injuries of his female passenger, who was also in her 40s or 50s, are not known.

The driver of the lorry is from the Ipswich area but it is not known where the two casualties are from.

Pc Alan Nixon, officer in charge at the scene, said: "The driver of the car is fairly seriously injured and I am led to believe he has suffered chest injuries. The lorry driver is uninjured.

"I believe we do have some witnesses but we are appealing for other witnesses to come forward.

"It is possible people saw what happened but left the scene."

Three fire engines worked to cut the man free of the car and he was then taken to Ipswich Hospital, he is believed to have been accompanied by the female passenger.

The air ambulance also attended the scene but is not believed to have been needed.

The collision took place at about 9.15am today and caused the closure of the road from Ipswich to Westerfield.

Pc Nixon said it would remain closed for several hours while scenes of crime and accident investigators attended.

Anyone with any information about the accident should contact Pc Nixon at Suffolk police on 01473 613500.
