STYLISH students showed off their skills at Suffolk College.

More than 200 of wannabe crimpers and beauticians let their hair down with some stunning creations on an Easter theme.

They were taking part in the college's annual hair and beauty competition under the critical eyes of professionals from across the county who were judging the entrants.

Flair and imagination underscored many of the designs with so much exotic colour bursting out from all quarters, that proud parents and families soon forgot the greyer weather outside!

Christine Howard, head of the health and beauty department at the Ipswich-based college, said last night's event gave students a chance to express themselves – and to impress future employers.

"It always allows them to bring out their creative skills – it gives them a license to be as creative as possible," she said.

The judges were taking an eager interest in the talent on show – and were certainly on the look out for a star of the future.

Barbara Gilder, hair stylist at Shrublands Hall, near Coddenham said that she found the enthusiasm of the students "inspiring". Other firms were keeping an eagle eye on proceedings, including top London salon and sponsors, Goldwell Hair Cosmetics.

The college is famed for the quality of its styling and beauty department – which is why Essex teenager, Laura Gooch, who was busy turning pal, Kerry Aldridge, into an Easter bird of paradise, came across the border.

"My boss said that the training is better here than anywhere else," said the 18-year-old.
