Culinary feast at college

IT WAS feelin' hot, hot, hot in the kitchens of Suffolk College when Ipswich school pupils cooked up a Caribbean culinary feast.

Pupils from high schools around the town, who are hoping to get into the hospitality industry, got together as part of an alternative curriculum to arrange the Caribbean day.

Pupils from high schools around the town, who are hoping to get into the hospitality industry, got together as part of an alternative curriculum to arrange the Caribbean day.

Friends, parents and even teachers were invited along to sample the recipes that the youngsters had picked out and cooked themselves.

The pupils aged between 14 and 16 go to the college two or three times a week to learn key skills in hospitality, rather than just sitting in the classroom.

Christine Howard, head of hospitality and catering at Suffolk College said the day went really well.

She said: "It was totally their project – the teachers took a back seat.

"Because it is alternative education they were interested in the hands on approach.

"They had Caribbean music on in the background while they cooked."
