BACKERS of a new £8.5million dance centre on Ipswich Waterfront have been given a tour of how work is progressing.

Once complete, Dance East will be a state-of-the-art centre providing dance facilities for the community as well as attracting national and international interest in Ipswich as a cultural centre.

The dance centre will take up a four-storey section of a 23-storey building being constructed by Wharfside Developments.

The centre is funded by a number of backers who congregated on the former Waterfront site of Cranfield Mill to check on the project's progress.

Chief executive of Ipswich Borough Council, James Hehir, was joined by chief executive of the Arts Council England, Andrea Stark and chair of the Jerwood Foundation, Alan Grieve, for a tour of the site.

The Dance East section of the 23-storey building, which will be the tallest in East Anglia, is due to be completed by January.

Spokeswoman for Dance East, Louise Cullen, said: “The event was a landmark because everybody actually got to see the building rising from the ground.

“To have major funders see the progress was a very special day for Dance East.

“Once up and running it will massively improve access to dance education.

“People will come from all over the world to dance classes tailored for everyone in the community.

“It will be the cultural hub of the Waterfront development.”
