HIGHWAYS experts are to investigate ways of making safer a bridge that villagers claim is dangerous.

Scripps Cross Bridge is on a narrow, sharp bend on the B115 at Monk's Eleigh and has no signs to control from which direction traffic has priority over the other.

Over the years many motorists have been caught out by the severity of the sharp bend and the parish council has now asked Suffolk County Council to look at ways of making the bridge safer.

With an increasing amount of traffic travelling over the bridge – including heavy goods vehicles using the route as a cut through from towns such as Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds – the parish council felt it was time action was taken to improve safety there.

Monks Eleigh Parish Council clerk Vicky Waples said: "The parish council has been trying to get the highways department to look at ways of improving the bridge.

"The council is concerned about the positioning of the bridge because it is on a sharp bend and sight lines are not visible as you approach. We have been trying to get action taking for the last year."

County councillor John Roberts said the bridge has been the subject of ongoing discussions and it was due to be examined by the authority's highways experts.

"The parish council feel there should be traffic measurements put in place at the bridge and the county council has looked at ways of improving the safety of the bridge," he added.

"A member of the highways department is to visit the site sometime in June to consider what kind of signage would be suitable."

A Suffolk County Council spokesman confirmed it was considering putting new signs at the bridge to warn drivers of the narrow road and the sharp bend and added that was likely to happen in the summer.
