TAKING his car for a spin had a whole new meaning for one Ipswich daredevil when he spun his beloved Fiesta for charity.

Fearless Shaun Wright, 24, hoped to shatter his record of £1,500 raised for the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service at Foxhall stadium yesterday .

Dozens of thrillseekers, included Shaun's mother and wife, turned out to see the stomach-churning stunt.

Former firefighter Shaun said: "I hit the six foot ramp at about 60mph and then rolled the car twice. It is very scary but the whole thing happened so fast."

He knows the good work the volunteer doctors do at the side of the road. Shaun, of Finchley Road, Ipswich, said: "I used to work right beside them and know exactly what they do."

Shaun has made the death-defying leap three times and was convinced his latest effort would be enough to break the previous sum he'd raised for SARS.

Stockcar racing is not one of Shaun's hobbies although he used to take part in rookie bangers.

Now, though, he is determined to carry on rolling for charity every year.

It's not to late to make a donation to SARS by calling Shaun on 07931443526.

The latest fundraising effort comes after The Evening Star's Save a Life Appeal to raise money for SARS hit its target of £20,000 last month.

The cash will be used to buy the volunteer service vital on the road equipment.

Many of the doctors use their own car to get to accidents and have little of the technology needed such as satellite navigation systems or tracking devices that will help them get to accidents as quickly as possible.

Radio contact with ambulance control is also essential along with mobile phone pagers for when they are in rural areas where mobile phones might go out of range.

Thousands of pounds have been raised for the Save a Life Appeal thanks to the generosity of readers and businesses throughout the past five months.

Among the major fundraisers were:

A gala night by Spedeworth £2,000; British Gas £2,500; Ipswich and Norwich Co-op £7,000, including £6,000 through its special 977 community share dividend; Round Table (Rudolph) £3,000; Bridge Ward Country Music Club £1,000, Graham Kalbraier of Direct Motorline Insurance £1,000; Evening Star carol service £289; Ipswich All Brass £488, and Ipswich Market £100.
