HER Majesty the Queen is to visit Suffolk on July 17 next year as part of her Golden Jubilee tour of the country.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are expected to visit Ipswich and Bury St. Edmunds during their day out in the country.

The trip is expected to start in Ipswich during the morning with visits to the Waterfront area and the Felaw Maltings, followed by a motor cavalcade through the town centre.

The Queen and Prince Philip will then travel to Bury St Edmunds for lunch and a series of events in that town.

The exact programme of the visit to the county has not yet been confirmed – Buckingham Palace officials are not expected to formally decide which towns to visit until December.

And the exact programme for the five-hour visit to Suffolk may not be confirmed until a few weeks in advance.

"We are trying to keep things as flexible as possible," said county council chief executive Lin Homer, who is also clerk to the Lord Lieutenancy.

The visit to Suffolk is being planned by Lord Lieutenant Lord Belstead and his deputy Lord Tollemache, who is a personal friend of the Royal Family.

Mrs Homer emphasised that the visit would be for the whole of Suffolk, not just the towns that the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visit.

"People from all over the county will want to feel part of the visit and that is what we hope to achieve.

"We hope to give people from all over the chance to be part of what should be a wonderful day for the county," she said.

The last time the royal couple paid an official visit to Ipswich was during the Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977 – but next year's celebrations are expected to be even larger than those.
