SELLING a town's historic Corn Exchange for £250,000 could lead to major improvements being made to a 1930s cinema and theatre.

Stowmarket Town Council has decided to sell the building in Church Walk to raise funds for boosting The Regal Theatre and cinema, as well as the community centre.

Poppy Robinson, town mayor, said: “I am disappointed that the town council was unable to use the Corn Exchange. But I am very enthusiastic about putting the money raised from the sale of this property to better use on other projects and services.”

Emily Metcalfe, deputy town clerk, added: “The building is currently leased by the Stowmarket Operatic and Dramatic Society and is used for the preparation and storage of props and scenery.

“After much deliberation, the town council has reached the conclusion that a different owner would be able to make much better use of this historically important building. Furthermore, the funds raised by the sale would allow the town council to pursue other community projects and to continue the improvement of existing facilities.

“The Corn Exchange was always intended to be put to a good use, however the town council has been unable to find a suitable function. The sale will ensure that the building does not become dilapidated and that it may serve the Stowmarket community once more.”

John Matthissen, a parish councillor at neighbouring Great Finborough, said the building had real potential which has not been achieved.

He said: “With a new Marks & Spencer coming into the town and the relief road to ease congestion, it seems a shame to sell the freehold when we are revitalising the community.

“In ten years time, when we are a very much larger town, we might need it. The town council could sell a lease on the building, which might be a better option. I would like to see independent traders in there, smaller craft operations, even an indoor market.”
