SELF-harming Jodi Orfford has been told she needs grow up by her own solicitor and stop her cycle of drink, depression and crime.

A court has heard how the 19-year-old gets drunk and depressed and then tries to get herself arrested at Ipswich police station.

Orfford, of Schreiber Road, Ipswich, appeared at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court, where she pleaded guilty to criminal damage and three counts of theft.

On December 1 Orfford, who was drunk, entered Ipswich police station. Stephen Colman, prosecuting, said that she was upset and threw a glass bottle at the glass in the police station's reception, leaving a dent.

She left but returned later to the foyer with razor blades in her hands, she threw a bottle of drink at a police officer and was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and causing criminal damage.

"This is the same as before and before and before, as you know," said mitigator Neil Saunders to the magistrates.

"I don't know what's wrong with Jodi but she gets drunk and then she gets depressed and then she wants to be arrested so she goes to the police station in a drunken state. If she is not arrested she makes sure she is, then she cuts her arms.

"The court system is going to lose its patience and she may soon find herself in custody. Jodi has got to start growing up," he added.

The court also heard how on October 29 Orfford had a confrontation with a security guard in Bhs department store in Ipswich. She threatened to throw a bottle of drink over the guard and when he put his hand out to stop her the drink went over £429 worth of clothing.

She was asked to leave but returned and was subsequently arrested and taken to Ipswich police station. When she was searched police found a stolen bottle of Charlie Red perfume worth £23.98 and other merchandise worth £6.98 from Woolworths.

She was also accused of stealing a bottle of vodka and a carton of cigarettes from Sainsbury's on November 24.

Orfford is receiving psychological help and is attending rehabilitation classes.

Diana Hunt, chair of the bench, revoked two conditional discharges given for offences committed in August and October and gave Orfford a six month community rehabilitation order because she felt progress was being made. Orfford was also ordered to pay £20 costs.
