TWO years on, Richard Risebrow has finally banished the demons of May 4, 2000, after being named the new mayor of Ipswich.

The Labour councillor had been due to become first citizen two years ago, but his plans were rudely interrupted when he lost his Rushmere seat.

He returned to the council in a by-election last year, and following his party's storming victory in yesterday's election it was confirmed he will be the town's next first citizen – as exclusively revealed in last night's Star.

"I'm very much looking forward to the next year. There was quite a bit of pressure after what happened before but I can't wait to get started now," he said.

"I really want to get out and meet people from all walks of life and from all areas of the community during my year in office."

Since his election defeat, Mr Risebrow has retired from his job as education officer with Ipswich and Norwich Co-op – but he is still involved with Co-op Juniors productions.

But this year, instead of being one of the front of house crew during their productions at the Regent, he will be guest of honour at the first night!
