A DEVASTATED wife already struggling to cope with the deportation of her husband is today even more traumatised after being mugged in Spain.

Tanya Barroso, 20, is now back at home in Ipswich while her 22-year-old husband Naematullah Rahmati – better known as Matt - has been deported back to Afghanistan.

Her short trip to Spain's Costa Blanca, which was supposed to cheer her up, turned sour when her bag was snatched.

Tanya's mother, Karen Barroso, of Melbourne Road, Ipswich, said: "We decided to take her and her friend Charlotte away for the weekend to cheer her up a bit because she seems really down. We thought we'd take her away for a bit of sunshine to help her relax a bit.

"She went out for a drink with her friend and she got mugged.

"They were just walking along the beach talking when some chap came running along behind her and took her bag.

"She was very shaken, upset and hysterical. She thinks everybody is against her at the moment.

"She had been starting to enjoy herself and the sun was helping."

Officials swooped on Tanya and Matt's home in Victoria Street, Ipswich, late last month and Matt was held in several immigration detention centres before being deported.

He had first arrived in Felixstowe aged 15 having fled Afghanistan where the Taliban had tried to conscript him and had executed his father.

He is now desperate to return to Ipswich – and his wife.

Karen said: "Tanya speaks to Matt every day. We just want him back really – the sooner the better."

Mr Rahmati plans to apply for a temporary visa which would allow him to travel to Dubai from where he can submit an application to return to Britain as an economic migrant.
