St Joseph’s College is an independent founded in 1937 and sits within an impressive 60-acre site in the heart of Ipswich.
Today, as we reach S in our A-Z look back at the history of Ipswich, we find out more about the school’s past.
Bryan Robson visited the college in 1988. The Manchester United captain was the longest serving captain in the team’s history, with his career spanning 13 years at the club.
The school was founded by the St John le Baptiste de la Salle order of Catholic Brothers. It has been a co-education school since 1995.
The school holds a yearly rugby festival which brings together the most talented school rugby teams from around the UK. The rugby festival was started to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the College, but is now one of the annual premier school rugby tournaments.
The Old Birkfeldians is the Alumni Association of St Joseph’s College. It is named after the site of the original school (Birkfield House) and includes actor Richard Ayoade, musician Brian Eno and politician Chris Mullin.
In total, the school has invested about £10 million in the site over the last eight years, making solid foundations for the future expansion of the buildings and students.
