Today we look back at the history of some of the local radio stations in Suffolk as we reach R in our A to Z look back at Ipswich’s heritage.
The 80s brought the explosion of disco. Here we can see a marathon disco set played at Sloanes Inn, 1984.
Radio Orwell began transmissions in Ipswich on October 28, 1975. The first record that was played on the station was Gladys Kinght and the Pips’ The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me.

BBC Radio Suffolk began broadcasting on April 12, 1990, and 24 years later it won the accolade of Station of the Year in the Sony Radio Academy Awards.
