It is hard to imagine a time when BBC Radio Suffolk didn’t broadcast on our airwaves. Yet the station is only 27 years old, and celebrated its anniversary last week.
BBC Radio Suffolk launched on April 12, 1990, at Broadcasting House on St Matthews Street, Ipswich, where it is still based today.
Ivan Howlett was managing editor, and presenter Chris Opperman was the first to broadcast on the airwaves. He spent much of his first programme dressed in a comical spacesuit.
The station has gone on to have much success, including in 2004 when it was named Station of the Year in the Sony Radio Academy Awards.
It also brought with it an increased popularity for BBC Radio 1’s Roadshow, which has visited Ipswich a number of times since 1990.

The Ipswich Star, and our sister paper the East Anglian Daily Times, has enjoyed working alongside BBC Radio Suffolk on a number of projects - and we look forward to many more years ahead!
