A MAN chased other residents out of the living room of a hostel where he was staying before damaging a door.

David Gardiner attempted to steal a Sky box from the living room of the Wilbury House hostel, in Norwich Road, Ipswich, before smashing a pane in a door when the manager locked the door on June 8.

Gardiner, who is now of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Wednesday .

Gareth Davies, prosecuting, said: “Mr Gardiner returned to the hostel and asked everyone to leave the living room.

“He chased them out before trying to take the Sky box from the room.

“The manager watched and threw him out of the room before locking the door.

“Later Mr Gardiner returned and tried to force the door open. The pane of glass shattered.”

Gardiner was given a conditional discharge for one year.
