IT was a case of double Dutch for Jamie and Jessica Mower when they each threw a message in a bottle off the Suffolk coastline – and BOTH got replies from Holland.
As reported in The Evening Star, little Jamie, four, was delighted when he received a letter from a group of woman who had picked his note up from the beach at Texel.
His message in a bottle had travelled nearly 180 miles all the way across The Channel from Shotley Marina and landed in safe hands – but it left his sister Jessica feeling a little left out.
"She kept saying will I get one and I had to say 'I don't know darling'", admitted mum Justina.
Then, one month after Jamie received his reply, the family of Great Harlings, Shotley Gate were bowled over when Jessica received a reply too.
Her message was picked up further down the coast on the beach at Domburg in Zeeland, meaning it had travelled nearly 80 miles less than her brother and taken longer – but that didn't spoil the fun.
"She was delighted", said beaming granddad Michael Mower, who organised the experiment.
"I put ten small pebbles in the bottle so when the bottles were floating the top wouldn't get wet."
Worth remembering if you are ever stuck on a desert island!
