Dozens dial 999 during flat fire

FIREFIGHTERS have tackled a blaze of rubbish in a block of Ipswich flats.

The fire broke out in a stairwell of the building in Berners Street and about 30 passers-by dialled 999 from 4.

The fire broke out in a stairwell of the building in Berners Street and about 30 passers-by dialled 999 from 4.44pm.

People told the fire service that flames were pouring from the balcony, above a chemists shop.

The fire was out by 4.58pm, and a police spokesman at the scene, said no residents had been affected.
