THERE was drama yesterday morning as a man being deported from the UK threw himself from a ferry as it was leaving port.

Harwich RNLI Inshore Lifeboat was called out at 9.10am after reports that the man had jumped from the Stena Britannica which was sailing from Parkston quay.

The man was picked out of the water and taken to the lifeboat station where police and ambulances were awaiting his arrival.

Keith Churchman RNLI press officer for Harwich: “The man was under escort being deported from the country when he broke free and jump over the side of the ferry.

“He was handed over to awaiting police and ambulance crews at the lifeboat station”.

It is not known at this stage why the man was being deported, but the Stena ferry was heading for Holland.
