IPSWICH: A woman is today recovering after she was rescued from the top of the Orwell Bridge thanks to a quick-thinking taxi driver.
A taxi driver dropped off a woman at the bridge just after 5pm yesterday and as she was acting suspiciously, he called police.
Officers arrived within minutes and managed to find the woman, who was at the middle of the bridge, and took her to the police station where she was referred to social services.
The Coastguard was called to be on alert but was stood down.
A Suffolk Police spokesman said: “We had a report that someone had asked to go to the Orwell Bridge in a taxi and they were acting suspiciously.
“We asked the coastguard to help but police had already found her so they did not need to do anything.”
Traffic was held up for a while as police dealt with the incident. It was soon resumed to normal.
Following the call from police, Thames Coastguard tasked the Felixstowe and Holbrook Coastguard teams together with the Harwich Inshore lifeboat to be on alert at the bridge.
A spokesman for Thames Coastguard said: “A woman was seen to be on the bridge. All units arrived on scene but fortunately the woman was apprehended by police units.”
