AN IPSWICH pubgoer accused of smashing a beer bottle over a man's head has been cleared of assault.

The jury of eight men and four women took just over an hour to find Jason Hunter not guilty of causing Matthew Saunders actual bodily harm.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that Hunter, 30, of Winterton Close, had been drinking in the Giles Tavern in Princes Street when the incident took place. Hunter said he saw Mr Saunders "charging" towards him with his hands outstretched in an aggressive manner.

He said he pushed him away causing Mr Saunders to fall back and hit his head on a door. He suffered a cut to his eyebrow area which needed five stitches. Mr Saunders took police he had been trying to prevent a fight between Hunter and a man called Ricky Clarke when Hunter had hit him over the head with a beer bottle.
