Barnes Construction has started work on the four-month contract to build the coffee bar close to the junction with London Road and Handford Road, and adjacent to the existing Burger King, which also has a drive through.

Over the coming weeks, Barnes will be installing piles and laying a ground floor slab. The steel frame will then be erected which will be timber clad.

Once this has been completed, a new drive through road, parking bays and paving around the restaurant will be carried out.

The scheme is intended to be ready in the new year.

The plans were announced in June when a planning application was submitted, after plans by pharmacy retailer Boots fell through.

Ipswich town centre already hosts a Starbucks - which is located in the former White Horse Hotel in Tavern Street, opposite rivals Costa Coffee.

Cineworld also has an outlet and there is a drive through on the A12 at Capel St Mary.

There was a coffee shop within the Buttermarket but this closed last year when the centre was redeveloped.
