THIS is the reason why we name and shame.

Barbara Sierkierczak was banned from the roads earlier this month after she was caught for drink driving - but showing no respect for the law she got in her car and drove again.

Her disregard for the courts was discovered by police thanks to an eagle-eyed Evening Star reader who called our office after she was pictured in our campaign.

They said they had seen the 26-year-old of Kingston Road, Ipswich driving in an area of the town since her ban and we relayed the information to Suffolk police.

Armed with that tip-off, officers duly laid in wait for her and snared her in Derby Road on December 9.

Now she is banned from the roads again but her case is a clear sign that there is a good reason for naming and shaming those who show such arrogance.

It gives right minded people in the county the chance to make sure they are safe on the roads by ensuring people like Sierkierczak keep off them.

As long as people continue to drink and drive, The Evening Star will continue to name and shame them.

During the court case at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court, prosecutor Lesla Small said: “The defendant was driving a Mitsubishi Charisma and drove into a car park, where she was immediately approached by officers.

“It was six days into her disqualification.”

She narrowly avoided a jail term after admitting driving whilst disqualified and with no insurance, but she will go to prison for ten weeks if she commits any further offences over the next year.

Magistrates also told her to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the community under a 12-month supervision order.

She has been disqualified from driving again for 12 months which will run together with her previous year-long ban.

The first ban and a £100 fine was imposed on December 3 after she admitted to driving with excess alcohol in High Street, Ipswich, on November 22.

Sierkierczak, who was then living in Benacre Road, was stopped at 7.15pm and found to have 51microgrammes of alcohol in 100mililitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.
