A CAR driver had a lucky escape when his car exploded in flames – the second such incident in the same road in a matter of weeks.

A fire crew from Woodbridge was called to attend to the blaze in Main Road, Martlesham, at 10.30am today.

The car, believed to be a Peugeot hatchback, caught alight on the roadside and threatened to engulf a hedgerow.

The driver of the car escaped injury however, an eyewitness, Christopher Warren, who saw the incident from his front room window, said that the driver of the car was lucky to have survived.

Firemen wearing breathing apparatus put out the blaze using dry powder extinguishers.

Five metres of hedgerow were burnt in the fire and the grass verge on the roadside was charred.

Mr Warren said that six weeks ago, a car was engulfed in virtually the same spot, but on that occasion the fire was less spectacular.
