A BAG containing wraps of crack cocaine and heroin was found by police who arrested a man after a chase near Christchurch Park, in Ipswich, it was alleged.

Joel Rees had jumped out of a car and run off after a police officer tried to speak to him, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Rees had run into Christchurch Park and a police officer gave chase, said Lindsey Thompson, prosecuting.

He was eventually arrested with the help of a member of the public.

An officer had returned later to the area where Rees had been hiding and found a plastic bag containing 28 wraps of crack cocaine worth £10 each and seven wraps of heroin worth £20 each.

A police dog also found a lock knife in the vicinity where Rees had been hiding.

Rees was searched by officers and was found to be in possession of £40 cash. However nothing connected with drugs was found on him, said Miss Thompson.

Rees, 22, of Sandy Lane, Dereham, Norfolk, has denied possessing heroin and crack cocaine with intent to supply and two alternative charges of possessing crack cocaine and heroin. He has also denied illegally being in possession of a lock knife.

After his arrest Rees claimed he had been jogging in the Christchurch Park area and denied having anything to do with the drugs that had been found.

He claimed he had run away from the police because he had an outstanding warrant out for his arrest.

The trial continues.
