A 21-year-old Suffolk man is to be confined to his home after admitting dangerous driving while drunk.

Daniel Varela was told he had driven "appallingly" and should go to prison for nine months.

However Mr Recorder Neil Garnham QC at Ipswich Crown Court said Varela was to be given a final chance as he was well regarded within his community.

Varela of Kersley Hall Lane, Stradbroke was told to do 100 hours unpaid work and a six month curfew order was imposed to prevent doing anything other than work for this maximum period.

He was disqualified from driving for three years and his license was endorsed.

The court heard that Varela was seen by police driving "erratically and at speed" around the A140 and A143 roundabout.

A six-mile chase then followed with Varela driving at 60 and 70 miles per hour through Hoxne and Stradbrook where the limits are 30 miles an hour.

He took a 90-degree bend at 50 mph and drove through a red light. Varela finally crashed into a ditch about 100 yards from his home.

Police officers breath tested Varela and he was found to be more than two times over the legal limit of alcohol. Seventy seven microgrammes of alcohol was detected in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

The court heard that Varela pleaded guilty to drink driving in 1999 and was fined £120. Varela who had numerous letters reflecting his character sent to court had set up a plan to prevent him ever drink driving again.

He would drive to the pub and get a lift home with a friend but on July 27 this year he failed to get a lift home and drove himself.

Mr Garnham said: "This was a prolonged period of appalling driving a blatant attempt to avoid the police."
