MARK Townsend is paying the price today for being loud, drunk and obnoxious".

The 25-year-old arrived drunk at the Karooze Bar in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

The bar's doorman Justin Stringer said Townsend became "more and more annoying, falling asleep, standing up and spitting on the carpet."

Townsend was escorted out of the nightclub where he walked with his friends into St Andrew's Street, where a witness Louise Marks saw him "trying to start a fight with anyone around".

The court heard that Townsend's friend who was not named, began to punch and kick a man called Jonathan Klimowicz in an unprovoked attack.

Mr Klimowicz suffered a cut mouth, bruised face and headaches.

Townsend's friend was not convicted, the court heard.

Townsend pleaded guilty to causing an affray. He said he pushed Mr Klimowicz but denied causing any of his injuries.

Townsend has lived in Sprowston Road, Norwich, until recently when he moved back to his parent's home in Kings Hall Street, Rougham.

Mr Recorder Karim Khalil heard that Townsend accepted that he was loud, drunk and obnoxious on March 29 when the offence occurred.

He also heard that Townsend had suffered with depression and had recently overcome heroin addiction.

Townsend wished to do an interior design course and find employment, the court heard.

Mr Khalil ordered Townsend to do 100 hours community punishment and a 12 month rehabilitation order.

He was also put on a curfew order from 9pm to 6am for six months and told to pay £200 towards court costs.

Mr Khalil said: "If it was not for your basis of plea you would be going to prison and that is the alternative sentence if you breach the order."
