DESPITE reaching her century Edith Smith is still a fiercely independent woman – given half the chance.

Up until a year ago Mrs Smith still collected her pension and did her own shopping, but since having a hernia operation her two daughters now insist on doing it for her.

"She is very independent and looks after herself without the help of carers.

"She loves life and never complains about anything," said her daughter Gloria.

On her birthday the immediate family took Edith for a carvery meal at the Wild Man, Sproughton.

"I do enjoy my food and have always eaten well. I also like my tea have at least a dozen cups a day," said Edith.

Then at the weekend Edith celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Cumberland Towers, Ipswich, where she lives. She was joined by approximately 50 friends and family and had a good old fashioned sing along followed by drinks and nibbles.

"I couldn't sleep the night before as I was so excited about the party.

"It was really lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

"I got lots of beautiful flowers and we all had a good sing," said Edith.

Edith has always worked hard and believes that walking everywhere has helped her stay fit and healthy.

"I worked at Rose Hill Road children's nursery and didn't retire until I was 72. I could have carried on if I hadn't told them my age," she said.

Edith has two daughters, Gloria and Audrey, three grandchildren, Sharon, 41, Julie, 39 and Kevin, 37 and five great grandchildren.

In June this year Edith is set to become a great, great, grandmother and said she can't wait to meet the newest member of the family when it arrives.
