Eight soccer fans arrested

EIGHT people were arrested as a result of Ipswich Town's FA Cup clash with Manchester City but none of those picked up by police came from Suffolk.

Three people were arrested and cautioned for being drunk when entering a designated sports event before Town fell to a 4-1 defeat.

Three people were arrested and cautioned for being drunk when entering a designated sports event before Town fell to a 4-1 defeat.

They included a 38-year-old man from Colchester, a 25-year-old Manchester woman and a 45-year-old man from Southend in Essex .

A 35-year-old Manchester man was given an informal warning for the same offence.

A 40-year-old Manchester woman was arrested and cautioned for possession of a Class B drug and a 33-year-old man from Tottenham, London, was charged with the same offence and bailed to appear before South East Suffolk Magistrates on January 30.

And a Manchester man was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage to a vehicle.

A Rochdale man of 41 was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and bailed to return to Ipswich police station on February 27.

He was arrested after a "scuffle" between opposing supporters outside the Novotel Hotel in Greyfriars Road, Ipswich, shortly after 9pm.

The Suffolk police helicopter hovered overhead as officers tried to break up rival fans who clashed after the game near the roundabout outside the hotel.

More than 2,000 supporters of Manchester City made their way to the match, despite it being screened live on BBC television last night.
