AN elderly man was conned into paying £190 to have his gutters cleared, and then had more money stolen.

Residents in Ipswich are today being warned to be on their guard after Wednesday morning's burglary.

AN elderly man was conned into paying £190 to have his gutters cleared, and then had more money stolen.

Residents in Ipswich are today being warned to be on their guard after the burglary, which happened between 11am and 11.30am yesterday.

The pensioner in Corton Road, Ipswich, opened his door to a man who stated he had been recommended by the neighbours to clear the gutters.

The man showed the offender to the back of the house, and the work was carried out.

The offender then asked for £190, and although the victim felt it was expensive, he went into the house to get the money.

The offender followed the man into the house and the victim later found that more money had been taken from his home.

The offender is described as white, about 50-years-old, with collar-length swept-back dark hair, and of stocky build.

He drove away in a white van with red writing on it.

Ipswich Police stressed people should be vigilant and not let unknown people into their homes, or agree to have work carried out until they are satisfied the caller is genuine.

Anyone with information about this crime, is asked to call police on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
