PEOPLE living in an Ipswich neighbourhood have spoken of their shock after a burglary in which an elderly man was tied up and gagged in his bedroom.

The incident, which police have described as "despicable", happened at about 3.15am on Saturday when the pensioner woke to find two men in his Park View Road house.

The man, who has not been named, was helpless as the burglars gagged him, tied him up in his bed and made various threats.

They then stole £350 of cash and jewellery before running off.

One Park View Road resident was shocked to hear such a horrifying incident had happened in the quiet Ipswich road.

She said: "The poor man. It must have been horrible.

"It makes you worry when something like this happens on your own doorstep."

Another said he was appalled at the nature of the crime.

He said: "It's absolutely disgusting.

"What's the world coming to when you're not even safe in your own bed any more?

"I hope the police catch whoever did this quickly."

No descriptions of the assailants are available, but police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward and help them catch those responsible.
