AN elderly motorist who suffered serious injuries in an accident at the Freston crossroads is today making a slow recovery in Ipswich Hospital.

War hero Sam White, 92, of Shotley, was injured when his car was in collision with a van at the crossroads on Friday - and initially ambulance and fire crews were very concerned about his condition.

But he is now understood to be making slow but steady progress in hospital, where his condition was described as stable.

Mr White was a seaman serving on the Russian convoys during the second world war and in 2006 was presented with a special medal from the Russian ambassador to mark his part in the convoys.

During the medal ceremony he met former shipmate Frank Rolfe who had served with him on the convoys.
