Elderly's home is just like a hotel

ONE of Felixstowe's biggest care homes for the elderly has a bright future ahead after a £200,000 project to extend it and put in place improvements to meet new standards.

ONE of Felixstowe's biggest care homes for the elderly has a bright future ahead after a £200,000 project to extend it and put in place improvements to meet new standards.

Mayor of Felixstowe, Harry Dangerfield, was the guest of honour as he officially opened the work at the Westcliff Residential Care Home at a celebration party.

The work carried out to the home – which straddles Leopold Road and Stanley Road – has included a new conservatory extension to the dining room, and seven new rooms all with en-suite facilities.

All communal areas, such as the lounge, hallways and stairs have been re-decorated and re-carpeted, and a number of residents' rooms have been re-decorated too.

Owner Robin Cannon, said the work had increased the number of residents the home was able to accommodate, from 26 to 33.

"The reaction we have had from people who have seen the work, residents, their families and visitors has been excellent," said Mr Cannon, who took over the home 18 moths ago from its founders, Jacqueline and Antony Pittaccio.

"People have said that it is more like a hotel than a care home and is not institutionalised in any way, shape or form. It's our residents' home and we want to make it the best for them."

The work was a major milestone and investment for the future of the home – which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year – and has included taking account of changes to care home standards being brought in by the government next April.

"We have also estimated the effect of the next regulations due in 2007 and anticipated what work will be needed then and have done it already," said Mr Cannon.

"I know some homes are facing problems because of the higher standards and when it comes to room sizes, some just cannot carry out the alterations, but the work is for the benefit of the residents."
