A CRUEL conman who posed as a policeman is being hunted by police after he tricked an elderly woman into handing over more than 1,000.

The 86-year-old victim allowed the crook into her home in Lings Field in Kettleburgh after he convinced her he was a policeman.

She gave him the cash when he told her he was investigating counterfeit bank notes and needed to take the money away to be checked.

Police are keen to trace anyone who may have seen the man before or after the distraction burglary at around 5pm yesterday.

He was described as white, 6ft tall, proportionate build, with short dark hair and wearing a knee length black fleece-type coat.

Police urged householders to be wary of cold callers and always check identification before allowing them in.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police said: “Always ask callers for ID and if you are in any doubt, close the front door and check with the organisation they claim to be from that they are who they say they are.

“Genuine callers will not mind being asked to wait while you confirm their identity.”

She added: “We would also advise against keeping large amounts of money in the house.”
