Former Army captain Christopher Butcher, 35, died on Monday. He had served in Afghanistan with the Royal Artillery. The news prompted an outpouring of tributes from the world of football.

Just before kick-off today in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road, which is being shown live on Sky Sports, a stadium announcement paid tribute in honour of Terry Butcher’s family.

Terry could be seen looking emotional as Town fans gave a warm applause. People seated near Terry patted him on the back and shoulder.

Ipswich Town legend Terry Butcher pays tribute to “dedicated” and “formidable” son Christopher following 35-year-old’s death.

Christopher’s younger brother Ed wrote on Facebook earlier this week: “Chris you were my hero, you were my best friend and you were someone I would throw myself in the way of a truck for.

“Thank you for everything you ever taught me. I will miss you for the rest of my life but you will never be forgotten.”
