The MET Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for Tuesday and Wednesday saying there could be a risk of flash flooding, large hailstones and power outages in Suffolk and Essex.
Forecasters say there is a risk of thunder and lightning on Tuesday evening through to Wednesday morning, as well as further thunderstorms expected on Wednesday afternoon.
Dan Holley, forecaster at Weatherquest, said: “The real risk is going to be tomorrow (Tuesday) night where we are likely to see a few thunderstorms developing.
“We are talking about late evening for the storms to get to Essex and coming into Suffolk.
“It will be pretty active lightning wise.
“It should be gone by mid morning on Wednesday.
“By the time everyone had got to work it should have cleared the north of Suffolk.
“Wednesday is looking to be a dry, humid and close feeling day.
“If we get enough sunshine we may get an isolated thunderstorm bringing some large hailstones and flash lightning,”
A spokesman for the MET office said: “Thundery showers are expected to push north across southern parts of the UK through Tuesday evening, perhaps turning more widespread towards midnight.
“Although many places won’t see these showers, there is a chance of localised flooding of homes, businesses and susceptible roads. “Frequent lightning may be an additional hazard with potential disruption to power networks.
“Similarly, but very locally, hail may cause impacts.”
He added: “Scattered thunderstorms with locally intense downpours will continue to move north across England and Wales in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
“Although the thunderstorms may tend to ease from the south later in the night, further, possibly severe storms may break out again on Wednesday afternoon.
“These appear more likely across central and eastern parts of England. Although many places will miss the thunderstorms, there is a chance of some localised flooding of homes, businesses and roads.
“Frequent lightning may be an additional hazard with potential for disruption to power networks.
“Large hail may be an additional hazard on Wednesday afternoon.”
