IPSWICH: A young man’s impression of swashbuckling Hollywood matinee idol Errol Flynn has cost him 200.

Paris Merrick, of Forfar Close, Ipswich, was fined a total of 100 after pleading guilty to threatening behaviour and obstructing a police constable.

South East Suffolk Magistrates’ Court heard the 23-year-old was in high spirits after consuming alcohol when he got a bit carried away at 12.30am on September 4 in Carr Street, Ipswich.

Police were concerned about Merrick’s behaviour after they saw him lift up a female and twirl her around. When they approached him, words were exchanged, during which one officer was called a “sad man” by the carpet fitter. Merrick then attempted to walk away and was arrested.

Referring to Merrick lifting up the woman, whom he knew, solicitor Ian Persaud told the court: “He was doing his Errol Flynn impression. I don’t think she minded actually.”

In addition to his fine, Merrick – who apologised to police – was ordered to pay 85 costs and a 15 government surcharge.
