AS flowers and gifts were being left beside a wall where Dean Bloomfield and Scott Towler were struck by a car on Friday, The Evening Star will be publishing your tributes to the teenage friends.

And we are today launching a memorial fund to ensure that the two schoolfriends will never be forgotten.

The Star will be launching a fund with a £1,000 donation – and invite our wonderful readers to make their own contributions.

The Dean and Scott Memorial Appeal will give you the chance to show how you feel about the tragedy which claimed the lives of the two 15-year-olds.

The money raised will be used for a fitting memorial to the pair after consultations with Dean and Scott's families.

Speaking from his mother's home in Humber Doucy Lane, Dennis Bloomfield, Dean's father, today said a memorial fund for the two boys would be a fitting tribute.

He said: "We're happy for The Evening Star to start a fund as long as it's in the interest of the boys.

"It's too soon to decide on what we will do to remember Dean but a fund is a good way to start."

Nigel Pickover, editor of The Evening Star, said: "The whole Suffolk community has been very moved by this dreadful tragedy and many people want to know what they can do to help. With this in mind The Evening Star has launched a memorial appeal and has started it off with a substantial donation.

"Clearly relatives and friends will want time to think of an appropriate memorial - our role is to help start things off, to help administer the donations and to offer advice in the future. We'll be talking to the families, friends and school in the weeks and months ahead.

"Everyone's priority at the moment is the needs of the bereaved families and our hearts go out to them. Many people have been left shocked and bewildered by this holiday time tragedy and the community will need to rally around in support of itself."

We will also be giving you the chance to express your sorrow about the tragedy which has devastated two families and left a community in mourning.

It is clear that the terrible news has shocked people across Ipswich – even those who did not know Dean and Scott personally.

Flowers and gifts have been left at the site of the accident at the bottom of Bishop's Hill in Ipswich. They were still being left there today.

Some were from schoolfriends, but many were from members of the public who did not know Dean and Scott personally but had been touched by the story.

If you want to send us a tribute or contribute to the fund write to: Dean and Scott Memorial Appeal, Evening Star, 30 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich IP4 1AN.
