The Evening Star has today been named as Britain's daily newspaper of the year.The accolade was announced at the Press Gazette regional newspaper awards at London's Royal Lancaster hotel.

The accolade was announced at the Press Gazette regional newspaper awards at London's Royal Lancaster hotel.

The Star took the title in category for daily and Sunday newspapers with circulations below 40,000.

It was also recognised for the quality of its production, winning subbing team of the year.

Graphic artist Jon Elsey was shortlisted for the designer of the year prize.

Judging in the awards was carried out by a panel of 60 senior journalists from across the newspaper industry, with the awards presented by BBC news presenter Bill Turnbull.
