YOUR EVENING Star has scooped the prestigious title Newspaper of the Year and its online operation has been awarded the title Website of the Year at a gala awards ceremony at the Tate Modern Gallery, London.

Victory in the BT regional awards for the South and South East was the seventh year in succession that the Star has either won the title or being Highly Commended. The Star is also shortlisted for Regional Newspaper of the Year in the Newspaper Focus Awards next month.

Editor Nigel Pickover, said: "The Evening Star is one of Britain's flagship regional newspapers because we care passionately about our readers – and are prepared to fight for them day and night.

"In our Suffolk town and villages, The Star's role is to fight for ordinary people, sometimes facing great adversity, who are often fighting on their own and often against great odds. Our pledge has been to step up this crusade.

"Our immediate concern is for that wonderful man, Lol Hare, and for the true grit he is showing after the speedway accident in which he was paralysed. But we maintain a constant vigil on the case of burns victim, Terri Calvesbert, and for a myriad of other causes including Disability Care Entreprise via the Press Ball.

"I pay great tribute to the hard work and dedication of everyone at The Star, from our printers and drivers, to our advertising and pre-press colleagues and our dedicated journalists. Whilst the newspaper and websites honours are great news for staff we must reflect that success back to our wonderful readers and advertisers and say a great big thank-you to them."
